Before you buy a mattress online consider some of the following key points. In addition to setting your mattress budget up front, do you feel that you are waking up each day with body aches? Are you getting a good nights sleep? Chances are the mattress type you have now is not adequate, so determine the mattress type based on where your sleeping habits are lacking each night. This will help you to choose between a cool gel mattress, sprung mattress, orthopaedic, pocket spring or memory foam mattress.

Mattress Firmness Ratings Guide

In order to get the best possible sleep each night, the firmness of the mattress needs to match your needs. If you suffer from joint and back pain, a medium firm mattress could be exactly what you need. As the body gets older and the skin becomes more elastic, the body needs a more softer mattress to provide comfort at night. These are things to consider before picking the firmness of your new mattress.  We rate mattresses using 5 levels of comfort.

1. Soft to medium mattresses

If you sleep in the fetus position with your legs curled up towards your belly then a soft mattress may be your choice.  Soft mattresses absorb the weight of your shoulders and hips whilst absorbing the rest of your body weight.

2. Medium mattresses

If you prefer less bounce without feeling to firm, then a medium firmness may be what you require.  Medium feel mattresses are strong enough to offer full body support without feeling too soft or too firm.  They are the UK’s most popular mattress type.

3. Medium to firm mattresses

For those who prefer to lie on their backs a medium firm mattress will offer full body support.  Depending on your overall weight, you should barely sink into this type of mattress. You will feel well supported and the mattress will feel strong.

4. Firm mattresses

Once again, the firm mattress is suited to those who prefer to sleep facing up or on your tummy.  Firm mattresses will support the entire weight of your body without offering much resistance.  They will not provide as much bounce as a medium firm mattress.

5. Extra firm mattresses

Extra firm mattresses are incredibly firm.  They offer little resistance or give, and provide virtually no bounce back whatsoever. They are firm to the touch and will be very rigid.

Choosing the Mattress

Before you run out and buy a mattress based on size, make sure you determine the correct mattress dimension that will fit perfect in your bedroom. If you and your partner are waking each other up at night, it could be because the mattress is too small, or you might need to switch from a spring mattress to a memory foam mattress that absorbs more movements during the night.

The Sleeping Conditions

Only you know how your body reacts each night when you are asleep. If you find that you are too hot while lying on the mattress, you might not want to consider a memory foam mattress because they tend to cradle the body and hold some of the heat close to you. This would be the perfect time to consider a cool gel memory foam mattress. If you are not getting the support you need and wake up in pain each day, a high quality cool gel memory foam mattress will relieve the pressure at key points in your body, provide a regulated sleeping temperature and give you a more restful nights sleep.

Be sure that if you are still unsure about which mattress you should buy, take a drive to Sleeponit retail shop and give as many mattresses as possible a test drive. You are not obligated to buy the mattress, simply tell a member of our sales team you want to test them out and will let them know. Kick off your shoes and get a feel for the difference in that spring versus memory foam so that when you are finally ready to buy a mattress, you have a much better understand how they feel.
