The storage beds get their unique name from the beds used by captain's on their boats. These captain's beds used in rooms that had very limited space, basically a mattress placed on a box that was equipped with multiple drawers for storing personal belongings. They grew in popularity because of their effectiveness, making their way into houses where storage space was at an absolute premium. The storage beds today are available for both children and adults can come in three basic styles.
The Captain’s Storage Bed
The most common of all the storage beds, the captain's bed has not really changed in design since it was created. Although styles and materials might be different, the basic idea behind these storage beds is the mattress sits on top of a frame that has drawers beneath. Some have drawers on both sides, some even at the foot board, but these storage areas allow for less clutter in small rooms. The adult beds usually have several rows depending on the height of the frame, whereas the children version has a single row because they are closer to the ground.
The Lift Storage Bed
Designed similar is style to the captain's bed, the lift storage bed doesn't have the drawers on each side of the base of the bed for storage. The unique feature of this type of bed is that you left the storage bed in order to access the entire area that is under the mattress. This larger space provides plenty of storage area for adult or children, and the unit usually has a mechanical device that assists in lifting the mattress quite easily. Once the mattress is lifted to the open position, the hydraulics keeps the mattress upright to allow for placing or taking items out of the storage compartment. These storage beds are perfect for putting away heavier quilts, blankets, and other items that would not fit into a drawer too easily.
The Trundle Storage Bed
The trundle storage bed is more about storing a second bed than it is about storing away your belongings like you would with a lift storage or captain's bed. The trundle bed has a second mattress that is rolled under the top mattress, and can be easily rolled out and used for a second child or guest. Usually the second mattress sits lower on a spring system when stored under the top mattress, then after you roll it out into the room you simply release the springs by way of a foot or handle lever and the mattress springs to the same height as the first mattress.
